Sri Lanka vs West Indies
What’s at stake? Two teams who left the WC early. Two teams who are 7 and 8th on Test table. Truly not their glory days. Further, it gets worse for the Windies as Lankans take the lead. SL won the first test
To look out for? Dimuth Karunaratne’s form (147 and 83 in the Test) in 2021 has been spectacular. He has scored 854 Test runs at an average of 77.63. He has hit 6 consecutive 50s.
Concerns about? West Indies batters can’t seem to hold a candle to the Lankan spinners. Ramesh Mendis took 7 in the match, while Lasith Embuldeniya took 6 and Praveen Jayawickrama took 5. 18 out of 20 wickets fell to spin. At one point in the 2nd innings, Windies were trotting at 18-6. All wickets went to the spinners. Basically it was spin, turn, bounce, and check-mate.
WTF - Jeremy Solozano made his debut for West Indies but unfortunately his debut lasted only a session.
This is the latest news
South Africa was Netherlands
What’s at stake? An associate nation is in South Africa. Such a big tour for them. Right? One small thing. South Africa aren’t in the top 8 teams who make the 2023 ODI World Cup. In fact Ireland and Netherlands are ahead of them. South Africa has to win 8 out of their upcoming 12 games or fight it out with a bunch of associate nations for entry to the WC.
Who is the minnow now?
To look out for? After all this, SA has rested Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada. Anrich Nortje, Rassie van der Dussen. Btw Rabada is down with Covid. Things could go bad real quick. and they did…because..
Concerns Rising Covid cases in South Africa. And Nethelands.
WTF Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB) wanted to get out of SA cause of the rising cases and the 2nd and 3rd ODI had been adjourned but there were no flights home because of lockdown and now it is up to the cricketers if they want to play. Madness.
Also, India tours South Africa next. After England and Aussie tour being Covid casualties, CSA can’t afford to lose India.
Pat Cummins, the captain
What’s at stake? Tim Paine is out. He term had its lows but since this was supposed to be a re-building phase, everyone supported him. Now Cricket Australia need to dig deeper.
To look out for? How do you dig deep? Bring back Steve Smith as Vice Captain!
Jokes apart, this moment though, belongs to Pat Cummins, who is one of the best in the business right now. A delight to watch and a constant trier/giver.
Concerns Ashes. Under two weeks away. As highlighted earlier, CA seems to be going to steps ahead, one step back. Smith is back in leadership role. Paine is indefinitely out of the game . What about Cummins? Will bowling affect him? Some think not.
WTF Cricket Tasmania said Tim Paine "will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future". He still features in the Ashes squad though.
