India VS Sri Lanka
India (The B team) won the first ODI rather comfortably. Prithvi Shaw did his bit, followed by Ishan Kishen and Surya Kumar Yadav. In the bowling department, it was heartening to see Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzavendra Chahal bowl in tandem. Krunal Pandya chimed in with 10 overs for 26 only (and 1 wicket). The captain Shikhar held the innings together with a solid 86. A comfortable win. Possibly a sign of things to come in this series.
It is curious to see how the players take this series. In some ways it is an audition for the World Cup. Read more about the series and its importance here.
Btw Manish Pandey scored 26 of 40 while chasing. What does one make of it? How important is this series for him? Can he stake a claim for a permanent spot or has that ship sailed. An interesting fact about Pandey, since the start of 2015, he averages 60.28 in 83 List A innings and strikes at 95.93. The reason why he is always on the periphery. Read more about him here.
England vs Pakistan
As you must have read in the previous edition, England’s primary squad is in isolation due to a Covid outbreak. Which meant, a second string team was assembled on a short notice. That team was able to beat Pakistan (A team) 3-0 in an ODI series was perhaps the story of this week.
Of course, Pakistani media went berserk but before heads could roll, the T20 series waltzed in and Pakistan won the first game and everyone (mostly Shoaib Akhtar) just chilled out. Babar and Rizwan at the top seem to be working well but the one performance that caught everybody’s attention was Liam Livingstone’s 103 of 43 deliveries only. Catch the highlights below. Read more about his practice session before the innings.
Elsewhere in England
The Hundred is going to be unveiled this week. Every non English fan thinks it will fail. Most of the English fans think it will fail. Primarily, except for the ECB, everyone thinks it will fail. Or may be it should fail. I am all for innovation in cricket but what the fuck is a set.
A set is a 5 ball thing. Not sure if we can call it over.
Having said that, of course I will be tuning in. Looking forward to the 22nd.
